Penetration Testing | Security Auditing

Well this year looks to be very busy with Penetration Testing. Already since the start of the year we have conducted several tests, largely web server based but a couple of on-site visits have been carried out.

More investment has been set aside to support this part of the business, various new tools have been acquired for us to "play" with, allowing for a more efficent service.

However you still can't beat the satisfaction of a good social engineering attack "Hi, it's...erm..John Smith from IT, can I have your username and password please?"

Ok maybe it's not quite that simple but you get the idea!

Network Upgrade | Cisco Routers and Wireless

Finally completed another network upgrade, as usual we have used Cisco devices throughout to ensure the power of the companies network is maximised.

The new network infrastructure includes a Public Wifi Hotspot, Secured VLANs and VOIP.

The network also needs to support an internal security camera system, this is now being developed and rolled out.

News Roundup for June | Outsourced IT Support

We really must keep these news pages up to date, been a while since we posted anything. So with that in mind here's a quick news roundup of what's been happening since April.

Essentially we've been quite busy, several more businesses are benefitting from our Outsourced IT Support Services, specifically Microsoft Server and Cisco Networking support.

We are working on a number of Microsoft and Cisco projects, primarily dealing with Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning. We are also still cabling, a relatively large company requires quite an extensive upgrade and so we have been laying meters and meters of it.

Some new websites have also been developed, these include a Garden Centre Online Shop, a local Beautician and a Wine Shop;

All of these sites are now managed with ongoing SEO and Content Support.

With all of this additional information to process we have decided that we need to offer a more efficient service for our customers and have now decided to extend our in-house hosting services.

We have extended the office premises and are currently in the process of installing new equipment, we will soon be able to centralise more of our hosting services, including Web, Email Forefront Security, Off-site Backups and Virtual Servers. But more on that later when it's all ready.

Microsoft Exchange Organisation | Windows Server 2008

After some extensive project planning, we have now launched a new Windows Server backend infrastructure for a Fife based company.

A large part of the time was actually taken up designing the Exchange Organisation, creating a system of Distribution Groups, Address Books and Public Folders.

The whole network is managed with Active Directory, divided up into manageable Organisational Units and secured by Group Policy.

The company originally utilised a workgroup network, so switching to Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange has been a slight learning curve as they get used to many new features, but with plenty of desktop training we have aided a smooth transition.

New Website Launched | Hospitalfield Centre for Art and Culture

After a couple of months in development we have finally launched a new website for Hospitalfield, the Centre for Art and Culture, based in Arbroath, Scotland.

Hospitalfield has been dedicated to the arts for over 100 years and provides artist from all over the world with a tranquil, peaceful and historical place to be inspired.

With this in mind we felt the best approach for their new website would be to keep it clean and simple, acting as a canvas for the various images and photography of artwork.

A large amount of events are to be held at Hospitalfield this year and so the website also needs to be an information portal for anyone wishing to attend.

Networking | Cabling, New Routers and Switches, Wireless

Been a while since we posted some news, been a bit busy over the festive season dealing with networking.

One of our current projects involves quite a bit of networking, but right from the basics, not just slotting some new kit into a shiny comms rack, but working "outside" laying cables around two large areas, then interconnecting them with a point to point wireless link (this also involves determining Fresnel Zone Clearance, ten points to anyone who can tell me what that is!) (without googling it!).

Once all that's done we can get back to the shiny comms racks and install some kit.

The project is essentially quite a large expansion of a current companies infrastructure into new premises, whilst upgrading the Networking Kit, Servers and Workstations. Although some good network designs have been produced for the infrastructure, we've had to re-work a few things on the fly.

The network should be ready within the next two weeks, so we'll publish a bit more detail later.

New Websites | Corporate and Ecommerce

The past couple of months has finally revealed the launch of three new websites.

Two of which for the same company, one Corporate Site and one Ecommerce, both quite large websites built for a National Company within a tight(ish) deadline.

Not that the finished articles were rushed off course!

And another site has been launched to promote Scottish Venison, primarily a web portal for everything venison related.

These projects mark quite an achievement for Aerovision IT, a wealth of adiditional functionality has been created to support both of these sites.

Now we have the ongoing tasks of optimising and maintaining the backends!

Dundee Heritage

After another long selection process, we have been given the go-ahead to begin supporting the Dundee Heritage Trust, RRS Discovery and Verdant Works family of Websites.

Our role will be to act as Webmaster for the organisation, providing technical support for the websites as well as the ongoing maintenance required to keep the websites at the leading edge of web technologies.

We will also implement an SEO routine, beginning with a re-write/upgrade of the HTML code (to XHTML), ensuring it all validates with the W3C Validation Service. Once that has been done we can concentrate on improving organic visits to the websites, modifying the layout where necessary to improve the user experience.

The main website is quite large, with a lot of code to update, so we had better stop writing this news page and get back to work!

Security Policy

A client in Glasgow has to achieve a specific ISO status within three weeks and remain certified indefinately.

Our solution is to design an Active Directory Architecture which will adhere to the exact requirements of the ISO requirements.

Using a well planned system of Organisational Units and Group Policy Objects we will tie down the security of the companies internal and external network infrastructure.

This project will also involve upgrading the current network with more advance Server equipment and expanding the companies remote access capability.

IT Security Consulting Support | Edinburgh

After a long selection process we now provide IT Security Consulting Support to a National Company based in Edinburgh.

Our primary role will be to firstly secure the companies network, then provide managed security and networking support on a daily basis to ensure the integrity of the companies data.

The company mostly uses Cisco devices within the core of the network (ASA, Routers, MLS, VOIP etc..) which allows us to design a very secure system based on Cisco's Self Defending Network Topology.

We will also run a system of continuous Penetration Testing, obviously using other outside agencies to try and crack our security (not likely!) along with auditing and day to day monitoring of network usage.

Cisco Network | Project Update

A large Cisco Project we have been planning for has finally started for a company based in Edinburgh.

The initial backend Cisco Routers, Switches and ASA have been installed on-site and set to work (pre-staging and testing was already conducted back at Aerovision IT Main Office).

Old networking kit has been competely removed (sorry Dell and Netgear) and the company now only uses Cisco within it's core infrastructure.

Everything has gone according to plan, the company is contining to work as normal whilst we monitor the traffic and implement the extensive security policies.

The next major task will be the installation of Cisco VOIP Telephones throughout the companies Head Office and Call Centre.

Active Directory Project | UK Wide Deployment

After several weeks in planning we have now started to roll-out new Domain Controllers around the UK for a large retail company.

The primary purpose of this project is to allow the IT Support Department to have centralised control of their resources using Microsoft Active Directory Services.

Rolling-out the Domain Controllers is easy (if not time consuming bearing in mind their satellite locations are all over the place!), the tricky part is configuring the Site-to-Site Replication Scheme. However we have accounted for their current bandwidth and designed a replication interval around their current usage.

DNS, Active Directory and File Services are replicating nicely with all sites being configured as part of one large UK Wide Domain.

Each site is then listed in seperate Organistional Units for management and security.

IP Addressing also had to be considered, we have implemented a VLSM IP Addressing Scheme, this allows for large seperate subnets to be created for each location whilst retaining the ability for route summarisation.
